Itinerary

Day 1 - To Cooma

Lunch & dinner included

Departing Nowra 5:30am, Sutherland 7:45am, Strathfield 9:00am we follow the Hume Highway to the Southern Highlands taking the less travelled roads through Bungonia, Tarago, Bungendore & Captains Flat with morning tea and picnic lunch stops along the way. Check in to our Cooma motel and enjoy dinner in the motel dining room.

Day 2 - Cooma to Dinner Plain

We thread our way through the immense ranges of the Kosciusko and Alpine National Parks and follow the Snowy River. Stop at the old slab school house at Suggan Buggan and then climb the precipitous mountain pass up onto the high plains. Stop at the village of Omeo before continuing upwards to Dinner Plain, the only freehold village in Australia above the snowline and designed to blend into the alpine snow gums.

Day 3 - Dinner Plain, Mt Buffalo, Porepunkah

One of the most spectacular drives in Australia today with breathtaking 360° views over Dargo High Plains, Mt Bogong, Mt Buffalo and Razor Back. We descend from Mt Hotham crossing the Ovens Valley then upward ever upward to the top of Mt Buffalo with a 13km x 7km plateau top, massive granite tors and tortured snow gum forests. Enjoy lunch with magnificent views from this very special location. Motel accommodation for the next 3 nights in Porepunkah.

Day 4 - Mt Beauty, Falls Creek, Bogong High Plains

Breakfast, lunch & dinner

A leisurely start then through the Kiewa Valley to Mt Beauty overshadowed by Mt Bogong. A lakeside stop in the pretty village of Bogong before climbing to the highest point in Australia with vehicular access to the summit of Mt McKay – for a grand view over territory we have covered. Next we drive out onto the Bogong High Plains and take a short walk to Wallace’s Hut, one of the historic cattleman’s huts in the high country before returning via the ski resort of Falls Creek.

Day 5 - Porepunkah (Free Day)

Breakfast & dinner

Today is a free day to enjoy the many activities on offer. There are many easy walks plus galleries, wineries, electric bike hire, brewery, shops etc. A regular 2 hourly shuttle will be operated to Bright from our motel.

Day 6 - Porepunkah to Corryong

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Today we drive via Myrtleford, Yackandandah and Tallangatta to Corryong where we visit the grave of the supposed “Man From Snowy River” Jack Riley. Overnight in Corryong.

Day 7 - Corryong to Home

Breakfast included

Our final day is via the town of Batlow with the main Kosciusko Range with “cliffs and crags that beetled overhead to one side and the overflow country to the other”. We head homeward via the Hume Highway returning to Strathfield at approximately 5:00pm, Sutherland 6:00pm, Wollongong 7:30pm and Nowra 8:30pm
